Zagreb Film Festival and the Autumn Culture Calendar: What to See in October and November

historic cinema autumn evening

The 24th Zagreb Film Festival runs from 9 to 15 November 2026, and the weeks around it fill up with cinema nights and concerts. Here is how to plan your evenings at Kino Europa, Lisinski and beyond.

Zagreb Film Festival: 9–15 November 2026

The city's biggest film week lands in mid-November this year. The 24th Zagreb Film Festival (ZFF) takes place from 9 to 15 November 2026. The organisers confirmed the dates in February. That gives you a fixed point to build the rest of your autumn around.

What the festival is about

ZFF has built its reputation on discovering filmmakers early. The main competition is for emerging international and domestic directors. That means you are less likely to see a festival-circuit blockbuster and more likely to see a debut by someone who will be famous in five years.

The track record supports this. Past competition alumni include Sofia Coppola, Taika Waititi, Radu Jude, Xavier Dolan, Debra Granik, Andrej Zvjagincev and Teona Strugar Mitevska. All of them brought work to Zagreb before or around the time they broke through internationally.

The Golden Pram and Checkers

Films in the main competition compete for the Golden Pram Award and for cash prizes. International feature-length and short films are separate categories at the festival.

For a strong local flavour, look for Checkers, the national short film competition. Submissions closed on 15 September 2026, so the selection is being finalised now. Short-film blocks suit a weeknight well: you can see several Croatian filmmakers in one sitting and still be home at a reasonable hour.

Planning your festival week

Check the official ZFF website for the 2026 programme, jury, opening film, venues and ticket details, and keep watching it from mid-October onwards. A few habits will help once the full listings are live:

  • Book competition titles early. Debut features often have only one or two screenings, and the evening slots go first.
  • Look for filmmaker appearances. Festival screenings sometimes include an introduction or a conversation with the director, so check the listing for each title.
  • Mix formats. Pair a competition feature with a shorts programme. Shorts screenings are a quick way to sample several new voices in one sitting.
  • Take the week off from cooking. The cinemas in the centre are surrounded by bars and restaurants, so it is easy to eat between screenings without crossing town.

Kino Europa: the city-centre cinema

If you only get to know one cinema in Zagreb, make it Kino Europa at Varšavska 3. Varšavska is a pedestrian street just off Cvjetni trg (Flower Square), a few minutes on foot from Trg bana Jelačića, the main square and tram hub.

2026 ZFF venues are still to be announced by the festival, so check the ZFF site to see which cinemas are involved.

Outside festival week, Europa is good for an unplanned evening. Its regular programme leans towards recent European releases, documentaries and themed series. Since it is right in the centre, you can walk there from most of the Lower Town (Donji grad) and the edge of the Upper Town (Gornji grad).

Other screens worth knowing

Zagreb has a small but committed network of independent screens. Look out for programmes from the Croatian Film Association (HFS) and screenings at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MSU) in Novi Zagreb. Repertory programmes at the city's archive and cinematheque screens are worth following too. In festival season, check which of these are hosting ZFF events once the venue list is out.

Lisinski Concert Hall: the classical season

Autumn is when the concert season settles into its stride. A main stage for it is the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall at Trg Stjepana Radića 4, named after the 19th-century Croatian composer.

The hall also hosts touring orchestras, soloists, jazz and crossover acts. Specific October and November 2026 dates should be checked on the hall's official site. A Saturday evening concert pairs well with an earlier dinner in the Lower Town.

Late November: Advent arrives

Soon after ZFF wraps up, the city changes gear. Advent in Zagreb usually opens in late November, filling the main squares, parks and the Upper Town with stalls, lights and outdoor stages through December. If your trip spans mid- to late November, you may get a festival week and the first Advent weekend in a single visit. The Zagreb Tourist Board publishes the official dates and programme.

Practical notes

  • Fixed date: Zagreb Film Festival, 9–15 November 2026.
  • Programmes: ZFF line-up, ticketing and venues on zff.hr. Lisinski and Kino Europa post monthly schedules on their own sites. Citywide listings are on infozagreb.hr.
  • Getting around: Kino Europa is walkable from Trg bana Jelačića. ZET trams serve the centre, and evenings there are easy on foot.
  • Dress: Smart-casual is fine for both the cinema and the concert hall. Bring a warm layer, because November evenings can be cold and damp.

Programmes, ticket prices and opening hours change from season to season, so check before you go.
